We are meeting in Paris

This year’s annual meeting of UNEG started off today in Paris. A range of issues were discussed on the first day. The future of print magazines in the UN was in focus in the first session in the morning. The post-lunch session on reaching new audiences included discussions on the use of new web tools such as blogs, podcasts, YouTube and Swivel. And the third session dealt with the use of plain language in the jargon-infested world of the UN. Tomorrow the discussions will be on topics like editorial convergence for magazines, books and the web, and copyright in publishing. UNESCO is hosting the meeting this year.

World of Work, Magazine of the ILO

Issue No. 60, August 2007.

Main story: The world of work is sensitive to changes in the environment. As climate change sweeps across the globe, governments, workers and employers
are facing its incremental effects as well as searching for solutions to offset them. World of
Work focuses on how climate change is affecting workplaces around the world and also looks at the new employment opportunities created by the global, national and grassroots initiatives promoting sustainable development and green jobs.

About the OSCE Magazine

The OSCE Magazine, launched in March 2004, is the flagship publication of the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

Published in English and Russian four to five times a year, it targets a broad readership in the OSCE’s 56 participating States and 11 partner countries through in-depth articles and interviews addressing the human, politico-military and economic/environmental aspects of security.

The Magazine is circulated widely in the OSCE’s 19 field operations in south-eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Now just over three years old, the publication has steadily evolved into a tool of public diplomacy. Print-run is 7,000 copies in English and 2,000 in Russian. French and Spanish versions are also available online.

About the OSCE website

The OSCE website is the Organization’s primary means of disseminating information to the general public and the media. The site receives an average of 1.1 million page views and 150,000 visits a month. Originally set up in 1996, it has since been redesigned and relaunched twice. The latest redesign (2005) included major changes, transferring the site to a custom content management system hosted on a dedicated server, and adding a multi-language search engine.

60 years of Unasylva - Weaving knowledge into development

FAO’s longest-running periodical celebrates its 60th anniversary with a special double issue, reprinting material from every decade of Unasylva’s rich history. The selected articles illustrate how “Weaving knowledge into development”, the slogan from the March 2007 session of the FAO Committee on Forestry, characterizes what Unasylva has been doing for 60 years. Collectively, these articles document the evolution of forestry and of FAO’s activities in forestry – and some of the earliest articles may surprise readers by anticipating concepts that we thought were new.

What globalisation needs

Openness, Equity, Change and Dialogue are needed for globalisation to work better. The economic and political map of the planet has changed, and progress on major challenges will only be achieved by intensifying co-operation between the world’s major players. The goal of a better, fairer, more dynamic world economy can be achieved and the OECD, by becoming an effective “hub of globalisation”, must play a critical role. The Bulletin of the World Health Organization is an international journal of public health with a special focus on developing countries. Since it was first published in 1948, the Bulletin has become one of the world’s leading public health journals. In keeping with its mission statement, the peer-reviewed monthly maintains an open-access policy so that the full contents of the journal and its archives are available online free of charge.

As the flagship periodical of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bulletin draws on WHO experts as editorial advisers, reviewers and authors as well as on external collaborators. Anyone can submit a paper to the Bulletin, and no author charges are levied. All peer-reviewed articles are indexed, including in ISI Web of Science and MEDLINE.
