This year’s annual meeting of UNEG started off today in Paris. A range of issues were discussed on the first day. The future of print magazines in the UN was in focus in the first session in the morning. The post-lunch session on reaching new audiences included discussions on the use of new web tools such as blogs, podcasts, YouTube and Swivel. And the third session dealt with the use of plain language in the jargon-infested world of the UN. Tomorrow the discussions will be on topics like editorial convergence for magazines, books and the web, and copyright in publishing. UNESCO is hosting the meeting this year.

The selected articles illustrate how “Weaving knowledge into development”, the slogan from the March 2007 session of the FAO Committee on Forestry, characterizes what Unasylva has been doing for 60 years. Collectively, these articles document the evolution of forestry and of FAO’s activities in forestry – and some of the earliest articles may surprise readers by anticipating concepts that we thought were new.

Openness, Equity, Change and Dialogue are needed for globalisation to work better. The economic and political map of the planet has changed, and progress on major challenges will only be achieved by intensifying co-operation between the world’s major players. The goal of a better, fairer, more dynamic world economy can be achieved and the OECD, by becoming an effective “hub of globalisation”, must play a critical role.
